Three Calls We Get From Steele Creek
Steele Creek covers a lot of ground between the airport and Lake Wylie, and the pest problems track the ground more than the zip code. Three calls come from here more than any other: fire ants in a new lawn, ants working up through a young slab, and mosquitoes on the properties that sit closer to the water.

New Subdivisions Run on a Predictable Timeline
Steele Creek has been building steadily for two decades, and new construction has a pest profile you can almost set a watch by.
Year one: fire ants. They arrive in the sod, and they show up as mounds across a lawn that was bare red clay eighteen months earlier.
Years one through three: odorous house ants and pavement ants. Grading displaced the colonies that were already on the site, and they work into a new slab through expansion joints and utility penetrations.
Year three onward: the landscaping matures, the mulch beds establish, and the property settles into a normal Piedmont pattern.
Where your neighborhood sits on that timeline changes what is worth treating. A house finished last year does not need the same program as one built in 2008, and we are not going to sell it one.
The Lake Wylie Side Is a Different Job
The southwestern edge of Steele Creek runs down toward Lake Wylie and the Catawba. Properties on that side carry noticeably more mosquito pressure than homes up toward the airport, and the season on the water side starts earlier in spring and runs later into fall.
Same community, different treatment. Near water we work the harborage, meaning the tree lines, the dense shrubs and the shaded damp ground where adult mosquitoes rest through the day, rather than fogging open lawn and calling it done. Fogging a lawn looks like work and accomplishes very little.
While we are mapping harborage we are looking at the same shaded, damp ground that draws termites and carpenter ants, so one walk covers both.
Older Steele Creek Homes and What Sits Under Them
Not all of Steele Creek is new. Plenty of it predates the boom, and those houses sit on crawl spaces over heavy red clay that holds water long after the rain stops. That combination is what brings the calls that actually cost money.
Damp crawl space wood draws eastern subterranean termites and carpenter ants, and neither announces itself early. We check the sill plate, band joist and piers, sound anything that reads soft, and look at the vapor barrier and the ventilation while we are down there. If the moisture is the real problem we will say so rather than treating around it every quarter.

My new lawn is covered in fire ant mounds. Is that normal?
Extremely. They almost certainly came in with the sod. A broadcast treatment plus direct mound work makes it a one or two season problem rather than a permanent one.
Ants keep coming up through the slab. Can that actually be fixed?
Yes, by treating the exterior perimeter and the entry points. Retail spray kills the ants on the counter and leaves the colony working.
Do you treat the Lake Wylie side differently?
Yes. Harborage-focused mosquito work instead of a general yard spray, because that is what holds near water.
